Well, I had this post scheduled to go up two days ago…and for whatever reason, it didn’t work. Let’s try again!

Back in the spring, I got an e-mail from a lovely young nature photographer named Jesse who was moving to the Upstate area. She asked if we could do a little shadow session, and then sent me her portfolio. Dude, I’m telling you. I wish my eye and skill set were as developed as hers when I was her age.

I suggested we hit Green Lakes State Park, which is somewhere I’ve been meaning to check out ever since moving to Syracuse. I figured this would be a great place for her to soak in some amazing scenery while continuing to explore her love for fine art nature photography.

So Green Lakes State Park is amazing, in case you were curious. The park centers around two glacial meromictic lakes. Meromictic is a fancy science word that means they don’t turn over when the seasons change. Because the water seeps in through bedrock, it contains a high concentration of minerals that do two really cool things. One, they form white crystallite reefs along the lake bottom, which are also visible from the shore. Two, the water is the clearest, most ethereal shade of jewel-blue I’ve seen since the Caribbean. Maybe ever.

Alright, so coming down the pipeline. Be prepared to ping-pong in several very different directions, my friends. Sorry to have you so dizzy. I have a gorgeous wedding I plan to share next week, a beautiful senior portrait session soon after, and three new abandoned spots that I happen to think are pretty great.

Later.

  1. I ran a race around this lake. So glad you captured the beauty and uniqueness of this – it was cold, rainy and hard to see when I was there…
