A Keene Sense of Adventure

This short set is dedicated to my other mother, Momma S. She’s been waiting for me to shoot this barn. It is the first of a multi-part photo spree I went on this past September with some of my oldest and dearest friends.

This barn is apparently very famous in the ADK (I had no idea). So much so, it has it’s own little parking area out front where many others stop to take photos. So many people have recognized and expressed adoration for this barn when I posted it on Instagram. It’s a special little piece of the mountain region’s history.

The rickety, collapsing inside has been claimed by birds, bees, and Mother Nature. She’s slowly pulling the old structure back toward the earth.

A lone beer bottle sits in the window, a past visitor maybe stopping to enjoy the history and the killer view.

One of the most pleasant artworks I’ve ever found inside an old building. I’d love to meet whoever did this.

My best friend of 22 years, Carly. Also daughter to Momma S. If you just stood still in this field, you could hear things moving all over in the grass. We put on so much OFF! Deep Woods and I still found a tick crawling up my jeans. (Note to photographers: Bug spray is your friend.)

Remembering this day puts a smile on my face and gives me that old nostalgic feeling in my soul. I have learned to love and respect the mountain region from my second family who considers it as good as home, and look forward to this trip every year now at summer’s end.

I haven’t been on any photo adventures in a little while, a result of finishing wedding season + the holidays + limited daylight + relentless rain + not knowing where to go. My last two attempts at going out were thwarted by bad weather and feeling lousy, but I’m sure eventually I’ll get moving! ‘Til the next one.

  1. Score with the glass artwork for sure. I understand how a certain place can be more than the sum of its part to a person. Nice reflection on this place…I can see why you like it.

Thanks Robert. Next time I go I want to plan enough time to see the train coords you sent me, assuming it’s still there. The glass artwork was so nice to stumble upon after the stuff we’re used to seeing.

      • Yes indeed. Hey if you opt to go to Troy for the trains, let me know and I’ll meet you there and show you the best way in (it is a bit of a hike, but my exit path omitted a cliff I had to scale down when I went in)

How funny…the coords you sent me in Sept. were for the Adirondacks, but just last week I was researching a train in the Troy area (must be the same one). You been? I do think I wanna go shoot it!
